The Australian dollar is the currency of Australia, including its external territories: Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Norfolk Island. In Australia, it’s usually abbreviated with the dollar sign ($). Sometimes it’ll be written as A$ or AU$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies.
The Australian dollar was introduced on 14 February 1966 to replace the pre-decimal Australian pound. In 2016, the Australian dollar was the fifth most traded currency in world foreign exchange markets, accounting for 6.9% of the world's daily share.
Fun fact: Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of banknotes made from plastic (polymer), which makes them much harder to forge. The polymer notes are cleaner than paper notes, as well as being more durable and easier to recycle.

Australia is a sovereign country made up of the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and a few smaller islands. It’s the largest country in the geographic region of Oceania and the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Indigenous Australians inhabited the continent for about 65,000 years before it was discovered by Dutch explorers in the early 17th century, who named it New Holland.
Because of its huge size, Australia is home to lots of different landscapes – tropical rainforests in the north-east, mountain ranges in the south-east, south-west and east, and desert in the centre. Australia is mostly made up of desert or semi-arid land, commonly known as the outback. The country’s also known for its cafe and coffee culture in cities, which has influenced coffee culture abroad.
When it comes to getting a visa, it depends on what type of professional work permit you’re applying for. You usually need a competent level of English, as well as meeting Australia’s health and character requirements, and holding an eligible job or profession. If you’re a business owner, you’ll need to hold sufficient funds, assets, or have a minimum net value to qualify for a Business Talent visa. The visa cost for this Australian permit doesn’t come cheap: it’s over 7,000 AUD (4,879 USD).
