The internet is full of possibility, and it seems that nowadays, if you are in business, you need more than just a company website.

Being seen online is important but even if you are feeling a bit lost in the online marketing world, it's easier than you think to cover the basics and interact more with your visitors, clients and potential clients through your website and online communications. You can build up an immediate rapport with your potential clients by using online media.

We have come up with what we hope is an easy way to start off and get into the habit – some "boxes to tick" which are manageable for the busy modern business owner!

Blogs are easy to use, search engine friendly, low cost, and a great to keep your customers up-to-date. You can use popular blogging tools like Blogger or our favourite Wordpress  for this, or get in touch if you would like a customised, integrated blog to match your website.

If you haven't already started to, it's a good idea to think about sending out regular email communications to your contact database. Even just short messages are good to keep your brand in their mind. It is however important to include useful and interesting content that is relevant to your audience – and short and sweet is best! Speak to us for advice, we have plenty of experience with this!

You can jump on the Twitter bandwagon! It's not something you should ignore – Twitter is a great way of keeping in touch regularly with "followers" and also reinforcing your place in your field of expertise.

Be sure to "follow" other people who are in your same sphere to find people in your industry. Just visit Twitter, sign up for an account, start "tweeting" and follow some people in your industry – check out the website We Follow. You can also add a "follow us on twitter" link to your website. And that’s how you start!

First and foremost, it's a good idea to ensure your website is up to date – nothing makes you lose credibility more than out of date information (even "copyright 2007" in the footer looks dated!).

Design-wise, things have changed and if your website is looking a bit small on the screen this may be because we are all on higher screen resolutions so maybe this is an opportunity to redesign it in a new modern way!

Once you have had a proper look at this, it's time to think about how you can you enhance your website to work harder for you?

Some enhancement ideas which may be appropriate:

• Include a "sign up to our newsletter" form (if you have a newsletter) (but you need to give people incentive – e.g, free e-book or regular tips on your subject of expertise!)

• Link to "Get a free quote" form or online quote facility

• "Free initial meeting"

• "Request a callback" form

• A "Find out what our customers say" link

• A "follow us on twitter" link

• Case Studies

• Online Galleries

• Testimonials throughout the websites

• Links to your social media profiles and relevant directory websites

• Logos of organisations you are affiliated with.

• A video which you can put on your website but also on YouTube!

If you install Google Analytics on your site, you can track the traffic that is coming onto your website and see what is working and what isn't.

Interacting with potential customers through your website and giving them choice on what they can allows them to connect with you in more ways shows you care about what your customers think.

If you need advice on any of the above, we are happy to hear from you!
