Poland

The Polish government's official target for adopting the euro is 2012, but economists are predicting 2013 will be the most realistic chance. There is support that Polish prime minister Donald Tusk should channel resources into containing debt levels and recovering from the economic crisis before trying to defend a stable currency.

At present, the Polish government is pursuing the implementation of the euro as soon as possible, while the economic state of the country suggests stabilization is a greater priority. Economists claim there is no need to hurry the adoption process of the euro, as Poland needs to scale back debt levels first. Supporters of adoption argue that it would save exchange rate costs for the European Union's largest eastern member, while those opposing adoption argue cuts in social programs would hurt Polish citizens.
