
This week's company results are dominated by food and drink as Diageo, Heinz, Whitbread and Rank all releasing results.
After the bank holiday weekend sterling started the week at $1.89875, 221.93500 yen and 1.48030.
Diageo, the world's largest alcoholic drinks maker with brands such as Guinness, Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff, is expected to announce full year pre-tax profits of around £2 billion.
Whitbread, the hospitality company will also be releasing interim results on Thursday, the first since the sale last month of 239 stand-alone pub restaurant to Mitchells & Butlers for £497 million.
The firm hopes the sale will allow it to focus on operating those sites that combine a pub-restaurant with a Premier Travel Inn. Whitbread's other brands include Costa, TGI Friday's and Beefeater.
Also releasing results this week are HJ Heinz, the radio and music business Chrysalis Group and Rank Group - which is currently undergoing restructuring under new chief executive Ian Burke.
