Norte o sur? Where is your Spanish escape?

Before moving to Spain, many people contemplate whether or not to go North or South, so we decided to take a look at what makes both special.

It’s all a matter of preference; the north of Spain offers fresh and vivacious scenery with waves of rolling, green hills and agriculture whilst the south offers a taste of Moroccan landscapes and architecture. Both accommodate beautiful traditional Spanish towns & villages that each has something a little different about them. So here’s a glimpse into some of the key spots and what they have to offer.

First we venture South to the principal cities of Murcia & Cartagena which are full of ancient architectural treasures. Here, you can almost feel the History guiding you along. The region of Murcia is far less ‘touristic’ than its Costa Blanca counterparts. That is not to say that it does not cater for tourism, the beaches of the region and the fabulous Mar Menor are a haven for beach lovers. The main areas of property are to be found on the coast in Lo Pagan & San Pedro and inland there is an abundance of quality golf resorts.

Next up is Torrevieja, a town famous for the two huge saltwater lagoons which surround it. These are the second biggest in the world and certainly the largest in Europe. The lagoons have been designated as national parks, attracting more than 250 bird species including flamingos. The flats have been used for salt production since Roman times and still provide salt for export worldwide.

Moving north of Torrevieja, we reach Guardamar Del Segura, a seaside resort with a strong Spanish influence. Here, endless white beaches are a natural attraction for families of all nationalities. Then we come to Quesada, a large award-winning urbanisation which has been developed to perfection over the last 30 years. The area is neighboured by the towns of Rojales & Benijofar where you can enjoy the traditions, fiestas and weekly street markets. The established part of Quesada offers larger independent villas on substantial private plots, whilst the ‘new’ Quesada (known as Doña Pepa) has large apartments, townhouses and luxurious independent villas.

Another of the lovely ‘Spanish’ towns is San Miguel de Salinas, which offers quaint traditions and is also ‘shouldered’ by Villamartin Golf-the most established golf course of the immediate area. Benijofar is a real Spanish town with schools, medical centres, supermarkets and all the things that make for a convenient & enjoyable lifestyle. On the edge of this charming town (& between Rojales town) is the urbanisation known as Benimar. This, like Quesada, has been designed for permanent living and luxury holiday homes.

Now to the North and the first stop is Alfaz del Pi which has a resident population of around 13,000 people and about half of those are foreigners. They are primarily British, German, Norwegians and Dutch, visitors so captivated by the area’s beauty that they never got round to leaving.

The beachfront at Albir boasts one of the most beautiful views offered anywhere along the eastern coast of Spain. The attractive palm fringed esplanade looks out over the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean towards the Peñon de Ifach at Calpe (a huge rock reminiscent of Gibraltar) and the hillside town of Altea with its distinctive blue-domed church. Altea is without doubt one of the most charming towns to be found on Spain's "White Coast". However, if you want all night clubs and the bright city lights on your holiday, give Altea a miss. This town is for the more discerning tourist who will be captivated by its medieval cobbled streets, its picture book old quarter and the delights of its palm-fringed seafront esplanade. Calpe has turned in to the one place to dine even if you have to travel from other places on the Costa Blanca. Do not miss out on the old town murals and monuments…all evidence of the area’s rich cultured past.
